Tip of the Day: school of Olgay Al-Yusufi

The school of Olgay Al-Yusufi is situated in the street of Souq Al-Salah near the school of Al-Sultan Hassan and was built in the time of the Bahri Mamluks. It is considered to be the only school that has a foundation text in which the words "school" and "mosque" are both used. It seems that scholars, at that time, did not agree to fulfill Al-Yusufi's wish of transforming Al-Mansuriyya School, at Al-Nahassin, into a mosque and he wantedThe school consists of an open central court (sahn) surrounded by four iwans (open-fronted halls.) It is known from historical sources that this school specialized in the teaching of the Shafii and Hambali doctrines, which leads us to the conclusion that there is no connection between the number of iwans and the number of doctrines taught in the school. The prayer direction iwan is the largest one of the school. There is a stone prayer niche (mihrab), on the wall of the prayer direction (qiblah), flanked by two curves at the sides. Beside the prayer niche, there is a wooden pulpit (minbar) made of joined panels. The mosque was built at the same time as the school, which confirms the statement in the foundation text, that it played the role of a mosque as well as an educational institution. The facade of the school is distinguished by its luxurious and well-designed decoration; it has nine vertical oblong memorial entrances containing windows on three levels. The minaret is on the right-hand side of the entrance, it is formed in three sections: the first is octagonal, the second is cylindrical and the third is in the form of a belvedere on eight columns. The dome is joined to the main building at the southwest end of the facade, and can be reached through the sahn of the school. The dome is spirally ribbed on the outside, and is considered to be the first dome to have been built in this style.  Originally, there was a public fountain adjoining this school, on which it was written that it was restored in the year 1046 Hijri to avoid exposing his school to a  similar situation.
