As millions of Egyptians nationwide took to the streets in peaceful protest, calling for democratic reform, all of us have felt our sense of citizenship revived, our pride in our national identity bolstered.
For years, we have had young people come in to CULTNAT to visit our work, and we have sensed first hand their feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction with the state of the nation. "We can’t believe that this center [CULTNAT] exists in Egypt" was unfortunately a very common sentiment, as if excellence and taking pride in our national heritage were alien to contemporary Egyptian reality.
It was these and millions of other young people all over the country who took the nation by storm during the past 20 days, galvanizing it and putting it on the road to immensely broader horizons of development on all levels, political, economic and cultural. In their revolt, the young women and men of Egypt gave the whole nation a lesson in civic responsibility. Never to be forgotten are the images of these young people rushing to protect the Egyptian Museum, the world’s greatest storehouse of ancient Egyptian antiquities, against fire and attempted looting.
Today, Egypt stands at a cross roads, and it is our duty to work together towards mapping our future. It behooves us at CULTNAT to remind all that Egypt’s heritage is our collective ownership, to act to preserve it, is to hold onto something that is extremely valuable to our future: our past. As an organization, our platform is the luminary work achieved by our staff over the past ten years to propel us fast forward into the future. As Egypt speaks its mind, we continue to work on over 40 heritage documentation projects with local and international counterparts. We look forward to expanding our work; for it goes without saying that the documentation and preservation of Egypt’s cultural and natural heritage must be an integral part of any national reform program.
The importance of the comprehensive digital documentation of our heritage becomes even more critical in times of crisis; at one level it is evidence as to who we are as a nation, while at another level, it provides those working nationally and internationally in restoration, conservation and the documentation of social history with the necessary tools needed for their work.
In the meantime, we encourage you all to take part in our campaign: "CULTNAT for Egypt". We are actively seeking your recommendations. Technology and its applications for heritage preservation, heritage documentation and dissemination of information related to Egyptian heritage and culture, both locally and internationally, are all areas where we would welcome your ideas.

لقد أثبت هؤلاء الشباب خلال الأسابيع الماضية أنهم قادرون على تحريك عجلة التغيير وأنهم قدوة تُحتذى في المسئولية المدنية. ولا يمكن أن ينسى المرء صورة هؤلاء الشباب الذين قاموا بأيديهم بحماية المتحف المصري، ذلك المستودع الهائل للحضارة الإنسانية
إن مصر تقف الآن على مفترق الطرق وهو ما يستوجب علينا جميعا أن نعمل سويا في تحديد طريقنا المستقبلي. ونحن في مركز توثيق التراث الحضاري والطبيعي نذكركم جميعا بأن تراثنا هو ملكية عامة تخصنا جميعا وأن الحفاظ عليه هو أمر بالغ الأهمية بالنسبة لمستقبلنا. فإننا نأمل أن العمل الخلاق الذي قام به فريقنا على مر السنوات الماضية سوف يساعد على انطلاقنا سوياً إلى الأمام. وبينما تُعبر مصر عن رأيها، فإننا ما زلنا منخرطين في 40 مشروعا تهدف للحفاظ على التراث وذلك بالتعاون مع هيئات محلية وعالمية. وبينما نتطلع إلى مزيد من التوسع في عملنا، فإننا نؤمن بأن توثيق تراث مصر الحضاري والطبيعي واحترامه هو جزء لا يتجزأ من أي برنامج إصلاح قومي
تبرز أهمية التوثيق الإلكتروني الشامل لتراثنا وتزداد خاصة في وقت الأزمات، فهو يعد من ناحية دليل راسخ على هوية أمتنا، ويمد من ناحية أخرى العاملين بمجالي الترميم والحفاظ على التراث محلياً ودولياً بالأدوات الضرورية للقيام بأعمالهم
وفي هذه الأثناء، أدعوكم جميعا أن تشاركوا في حملتنا، "التوثيق من أجل مصر." وإذ نسعى جاهدين للحصول على مقترحاتكم في تطوير عملنا لكي نتقدم سوياً إلى المستقبل، فإننا نرحب بأفكاركم حول تطبيقات التكنولوجيا في الحفاظ على التراث، وجميع أوجه توثيق التراث ونشر المعلومات المتعلقة بتراث مصر على المستويين المحلي والعالمي
