Sultan Barsbay built this mosque in the area of Al-Khanqa in order to fulfill the vow he made when he left Egypt to conquer the island of Cyprus. The vow was that if God would preserve his life, he would populate the area in which this mosque is located.The mosque consists of a square area with an open court (sahn) in the center, which is surrounded by four porticos or open fronted halls, the largest of which is the portico in the direction of prayer, which is formed of three aisles. In the center of the prayer direction wall is the prayer niche (mihrab), which is decorated with geometrical designs, made of marble mosaic. Beside the prayer niche there is a beautiful wooden wall decorated with stars. Both side porticos have two aisles, while the northwestern portico has only one aisle. At the eastern corner of the building, there is a public fountain that has two windows, while the four outer walls of the mosque, which are built with colored stone, have twenty-four windows.

بنى السلطان برسباي هذا المسجد بهذه المنطقة "الخانكة" - وفاءً لنذره حيث نذر حين خرج لفتح جزيرة قبرص إن أحياه الله ليعمر هذا المكان الذي نزل به وهو موضع هذا الجامع.ويتكون الجامع من مساحة مربعة يتوسطها صحن مكشوف تحيط به أربع ظلات أكبرها ظلة القبلة التي تتكون من ثلاثة أروقة، ويتوسط جدار القبلة دخلة المحراب المزين بزخارف هندسية منفذة بالرخام الخردة "الفسيفساء"، ويجاور المحراب بئر خشبي جميل مزين بالأطباق النجمية وتتكون كل من الظلتين الجانبيتين من رواقين والظلة الشمالية الغربية من رواق واحد.وبالزاوية الشرقية من التخطيط سبيل ذو شباكين وللمسجد أربع واجهات مبنية بالأحجار المشهرة "الملونة" تشتمل على أربعة وعشرين شباكاً
