Tip of the day: ABRAHAM ORTELIUS (1528-1598(

ABRAHAM ORTELIUS (1528-1598)
Abraham Ortlel, known as Ortelius, is one the most famous map-makers of the sixteenth century. Born in Antwerp, he studied Greek, Latin and mathematics. He first set up a profitable business with his sister as a book dealer and a painter of maps, traveling extensively to the great book fairs. During one of his travels in 1560, he was highly influenced by Gerard Mercator, and decided to pursue a career as a scientific geographer, rather than just a map engraver. Soon afterwards in 1564, he published his eight-sheet World Map Mappemonde, followed by a map of Egypt in 1565, a plan of Brittenburg Castle in the Netherlands, and a map of Asia.
